Em‘brace’ These Easter Treats

Unfortunately some of the most popular Easter items are ooey gooey, caramel-filled, and sticky sweet. They can get trapped in braces and possibly lead to tooth decay. But there’s no reason to worry! There are plenty of treats kids can still enjoy.

But before we get to the good stuff, let’s go over what to avoid. Here are some items your Murray & Iszkula Orthodontics hope you’ll steer clear of this Easter (and rest of the year):

  • Jelly beans
  • Caramel
  • Taffy
  • Gummy candy
  • Hard candy
  • Gum
  • Chocolate with nuts

By keeping these candies away from kids, they’ll avoid breaking  and bending wires.

A Sweet Alternative

Kids (with or without braces) don’t have to avoid candy or sweets altogether! There are some better options that, with proper brushing, can make for a more braces-friendly basket.

  • M&M candies without nuts
  • Baked goods like cookies or cupcakes
  • Rice crispy treats
  • Chocolate bunnies
  • Soft chocolates like peanut butter cups

Damaged braces or appliances can increase treatment time, cavities, and stains on teeth — and no one wants that! Make sure to always keep your braces and your smile in tip-top shape.

A Healthier Foundation For Fun

There are some fun alternatives to a candy-filled Easter basket that can be fun for your kiddos too! Try creating a themed basket based on their favorite hobby such as gardening complete with seed packets and digging-in-the-dirt tools, or art with paper and colored pencils or paints. You can also balance the yummy sweets with non-edible treats like games or gift cards.

The entire Murray & Iszkula Orthodontics team wishes you and your family a very happy Easter! If you have any questions about what kinds of foods can harm braces, please don’t ever hesitate to call one of our office at 814-833-5322 We’re always happy to help!
